Oncological support in the pharmacy: the new frontier of services

When undergoing prolonged pharmacological therapy such as anticancer therapy, the pharmacist becomes an integral figure in the therapeutic process with which one periodically relates. In this case, having specific support in the pharmacy can make the difference, which is why the world of pharmacy is moving to build a new dimension of assistance to cancer patients and represent the closest health center for them.

The University of Milan in collaboration with the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) has recently established the second level master's degree in Pharmacy and Oncological Pharmacology. The master aims to provide the pharmacists of tomorrow with in-depth knowledge of the clinical and psychological specifics of the disease by creating professional figures capable of comprehensively managing their role in oncological therapy.

On another front, sponsored by many realities of the Italian pharmacy, including FEDERFARMA, AGIFAR and FENAGIFAR, this year the path started in 2018 of "Oncological Pharmacy – Higher Education School for the Council”. The goal of the training course is to enrich local pharmacists with a multidisciplinary background ranging from cosmetics to oncological nutrition to assist the patient even on those aspects of his healing process that are often overlooked.

The new services pharmacy is therefore preparing to assume a pivotal role in the therapeutic process of the dehospitalized cancer patient to accompany him through the strong daily changes that the pathology brings with it.
